Why You’re Getting Cold Spots When the Heater’s On
admin • January 4, 2021

A central heating system is designed to provide comfort to an entire home—all the rooms connected to the ductwork of the ventilation system. Not every room will receive the exact same level of warmth because of factors like windows and insulation, but a well-installed heating system should still be able to keep the rooms heated to a general level that will keep everyone in the household happy.

However, this isn’t what your house is currently experiencing. For some reason, your home heating in Indianapolis, IN is uneven, and certain rooms are colder than they should be. You’ll want to find out why because this means irritable family members and guests forced to wear parkas when they’re in their rooms!

Reasons Heating May Be Uneven

There are many possibilities for why your home heating system is not delivering an even spread of comfort. Some are simple, others may require calling our technicians to repair the heater or even replace it.

  • Clogged air filter: Whenever you encounter trouble with your furnace or heat pump, one of the first things to check is the air filter. If it’s clogged, change it for a clean one—that may be the source of the problem. A heater won’t be able to distribute enough air through the ventilation system with a clogged filter.
  • Short-cycling: This is when the heater is ending its regular heating cycle too early, then turning back on again a short time later. The rapid start-and-stop of short-cycling will quickly raise the temperature in the center of the house, but won’t allow enough time for heat to reach the more distant rooms. Short-cycling can occur for a range of reasons, and you’ll need a technician to find out what’s happening.
  • Faulty thermostats: The thermostat for your home may be registering the wrong temperatures and shutting down the heating system before it can send heat to all the rooms. Professionals can recalibrate the thermostat to correct this.
  • Malfunctioning zone controls: If your home has zone controls to divide up how the house is heated and cooled, a fault with the dampers or the room thermostat may result in some rooms not getting enough heat.
  • Wrong-sized heater: If this is your first winter with this heating system, the problem may be that it was incorrectly sized when it was installed and is not powerful enough for the house. This often happens when amateurs install an HVAC system. The only correction to this problem is to replace the heater with one that’s been professionally sized.
  • Aging heater: For a heating system that’s 15 to 20 years old, the appearance of cold spots around the house is often a major warning that it’s starting to die. The first signs of a drop in heating capacity are when certain rooms are no longer getting warm enough. Let technicians examine the system to see if it’s cost-effective to have a new heater installed.
