An ERV? What’s That?

An energy recovery ventilator, or ERV, is a mechanical ventilation device. Rather than just exchanging air, however, and ERV exchanges thermal energy. It accomplishes this through the use of a simple heat exchanger. What exactly does this mean for you?

Winter. You’re running your heater. The air in your home would be getting very stale by now. But your ERV is exchanging heated air from inside your house with cold air from outside your house. Before it brings that air in, it pre-warms that air with the heat from the outgoing air.

Summer. You’re running your AC. The air in your home would be super dry and uncomfortable by now. But your ERV is exchanging cooled air from inside your house with hot air from outside your house. Before it sends that cool air out, though, heat from the incoming air is transferred to it, pre-cooling it.
