Why Is There Water Leaking From My Air Conditioner?
admin • July 19, 2021

The hot summer months in Indiana just do not seem like they will let up. Each summer is getting hotter than the last, and your air conditioner has to work harder to maintain ideal indoor temperatures. With all the additional stress, it might be a matter of time before your air conditioner begins developing problems.

One of the seemingly harmless problems your air conditioner can develop due to the strain is a water leak. If your air conditioner is leaking water, it is natural to wonder why that is happening. Many people choose not to do anything about a leaking air conditioner, provided it can continue providing decent cooling.

However, you should not take this lightly. If your air conditioner is leaking water, take immediate action to correct the problem.

This post will discuss the possible reasons your air conditioner is leaking water inside the house so that you can schedule repairs before it gives out and you have to call professionals for AC system replacement in Indianapolis, IN.

1. The condensate line is clogged

One reason your air conditioner is leaking water inside your house is that the condensate line is clogged. The condensate line is responsible for draining out the water accumulating in the drip tray. The condensate line can become clogged with dirt, dust, and grime. A clogged drain line does not let the water exit the house, causing it to back up and leak the condensed water inside the house.

You can use a wet/dry vacuum cleaner to clear the condensate line. It should remove anything that is clogging the drain line and allow the water to drain out again. If that does not work, there could be more worrying reasons for the problem.

2. The air filter is dirty

Changing your air conditioner’s air filters regularly is a crucial maintenance task because a clean air filter helps the unit get the airflow it needs to work properly. Failing to change the air filter can result in the unit having to work harder to draw in the air. Besides using more energy than it needs to, a dirty air filter can also block air moving out from the unit’s evaporator coil.

If there is inadequate airflow around the evaporator coil, it will cool down and freeze up. As the frozen coil melts, the water it releases will cause the drip tray to overflow and leak water inside the house.

3. Your air conditioner is low on refrigerant

Another major reason your air conditioner could be leaking water inside the house is that there is a refrigerant leak. When your air conditioner does not have enough refrigerant flowing through it, the evaporator coil can freeze up. This will again cause leakage when the system shuts off and the ice begins to thaw.

Is Your Air Conditioner Leaking Water?

A properly functioning air conditioning system is vital for your comfort. If your air conditioner is leaking water, you should not delay taking action. Turn off the air conditioner and contact professionals to handle the repairs immediately to ensure you don’t end up with a much bigger problem on your hands. Fortunately, that is where we come in at Vital Heating & Air.
